Cool Mornings, Warm Feet: How to Pick, Size and Wash Saltwater Socks

Written by The Saltwater Brewery Team

Most of the year, socks are the first thing a South Floridian leaves at home. That changes about now. This Sunday, November 1, the clocks fall back an hour, and the early mornings start cool. NOAA’s 1991–2020 Climate Normals for the West Palm Beach station put the average low at 66.1°F in November and 61.5°F in December. That is a cold boat deck at 6 a.m. and a chilly walk to the car. It is also the start of gift season, and a pair of socks is the easiest gift to get right. Here is how to pick a pair from our ten designs, how the sizing works, and how to keep them looking sharp.

What every pair has in common

Every design is $19.99 a pair, and the product pages describe the same build:

  • A cushioned footbed. The pages pitch it for long days on the boat, the dock or the trail.
  • A black foot. The design sits on the white leg, and the black foot hides deck grime, sand and salt.
  • A ribbed cuff that the pages say stays up while you wade, reel or walk.
  • A crew height in the product photos, so the design shows above a deck shoe, a sneaker or a boot.

The pages do not list a fabric blend or washing instructions, so we will not claim either. What they do list, and most sock listings skip, is a size range by shoe size.

Getting the size right

Each pair comes in three sizes, matched to your shoe:

  • M fits shoe sizes 6 to 8.
  • L fits shoe sizes 8 to 12.
  • XL fits shoe sizes 12 to 15.

If you wear an 8 or a 12, you sit on the line between two sizes. Go down for a snug cuff or up for a looser one. The LocAle and Screamin’ Reels pages list M, L and XL without the ranges, so use the same chart for them. Buying for someone else? Check a pair of their shoes. Shoe size is a much easier thing to find out quietly than a shirt size.

Pick the design

The ten designs fall into three groups.

  • The logo pairs. Ocean Blue Logo and Sunset Logo carry the Saltwater wave in blue or in gold. Florida Flag Logo and USA Logo fold a flag into the circle. Grain Logo is the quietest, a pale grain mark that nods to the barley in every brew.
  • The fishing pairs. Mahi-Mahi puts the dorado in a green circle. Express carries a sportfishing boat under the Saltwater Brewery wordmark. Jolly Roger flies the skull and crossbones.
  • The beer-label pairs. LocAle wraps the leg in the golden sunset of the LocAle Golden Ale label, and Screamin’ Reels wears the green-and-blue mahi from the Screamin’ Reels West Coast IPA label.

Where a pair earns its keep this season:

  • The early boat. A cushioned footbed and a black foot are made for a wet, gritty deck, and a dry pair in the bag is worth having for the ride home.
  • The cool walk to the beach. Shoes on until the sand, then socks tucked inside them.
  • The trip north. If you are flying out for Thanksgiving, a Florida Flag pair is a small way to bring the state with you.
  • The gift pile. Socks fit in a stocking, a card envelope or a carry-on.

How to keep them sharp

The pages carry no care label, so treat this as a sensible routine for printed crew socks, not as the manufacturer’s instructions.

  1. Rinse out salt and sand the same day. Grit left in a sock wears the footbed every step.
  2. Turn them inside out before they go in the wash, to protect the printed leg.
  3. Wash cold with like colors. The black foot and the white leg share one sock, so skip the bleach.
  4. Dry on low or air dry. High heat is hard on the ribbed cuff that keeps them up.
  5. Keep pairs together. A mesh laundry bag ends the hunt for the missing Mahi-Mahi.

Ordering, and where to go after

We offer free U.S. shipping on orders over $75, and the $75 counts the whole cart. Four pairs come to $79.96, so a set of four for the gift pile ships free, and so do two pairs with last week’s hoodie. Browse every pair in the socks collection. We ship merch within the USA only, and we do not sell or ship beer online.

The beer itself lives at the taproom, 1701 W. Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach, the first building off the I-95 Atlantic Ave exit. On Wednesdays we are open 12 to 10, and the food on site comes from the rotating food trucks out front. The events page lists what is on this week.

Pick the design, check the shoe size, and wash them inside out. Cool mornings are almost here.
