Hoodie Weather, Florida Style: How to Pick, Size and Wash a Saltwater Hoodie
In eleven days the clocks fall back. On Sunday, November 1, daylight saving time ends, and the U.S. Naval Observatory puts sunset in Delray Beach at 5:38 PM that evening, against 6:47 PM tonight. The nights cool down along with it. NOAA’s 1991–2020 Climate Normals for the West Palm Beach station put the average low at 66.1°F in November, 61.5°F in December and 57.9°F in January. That is not cold anywhere else, but by our standards it is hoodie weather, and it starts about now. Here is how to pick from the hoodies and jackets collection, what the product pages actually say, and how to make one last more than a season.
Hoodie or packable jacket
The collection holds two kinds of layer, and they do different jobs.
- The hoodie, from $45. Sixteen designs, among them the Saltwater wave, Screamin’ Reels, Sea Cow, LocAle, Florida Flag, Eco Turtle Only, Drink or Swim and Jolly Roger. The product page lists a 50% cotton, 50% polyester blend, a double-lined hood, double-needle stitching, air-jet spun yarn “with a soft feel and reduced pilling,” rib-knit cuffs and waistband with spandex, and a front pouch pocket. Sizes run S to 5XL. The Saltwater design is $45 in every size; on most of the others, S to 2XL are $45 and 3XL to 5XL run up to $51.70.
- The packable jacket, $64.95. Three embroidered designs, including the Trident and the Deadly Pineapple, in black or navy, S to 2XL, one price in every size. The pages describe a lightweight, wind-resistant shell with a packable build that stuffs down for easy stowing.
The short version: the hoodie is for sitting still on a cool night, and the jacket is for moving through a breezy day with a bag.
Getting the size right
The hoodie pages carry one size guide, measured flat in inches. Width is across the chest, armpit to armpit. Measure a hoodie you already like and match it.
| Size | S | M | L | XL | 2XL | 3XL | 4XL | 5XL |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 27 | 28 | 29 | 30 | 31 | 32 | 33 | 34 |
| Width | 20 | 22 | 24 | 26 | 28 | 30 | 32 | 34 |
Each size step adds an inch of length and two inches of width. If you plan to wear it over a long-sleeve on the boat, go up one.
Where a hoodie earns its keep this season
- The beach after sunset. Once the clocks change, the walk you used to take in daylight happens in the dark. The ocean is still warm in late October, and the air over it is not. Keep lights off the sand through October 31, when the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s lighting page marks the end of sea turtle nesting season.
- The early boat. A pre-dawn run gets cold at speed, even in Florida. The packable jacket cuts the wind and then stuffs into the bag once the sun is up.
- The porch and the fire pit. The front pouch is for your hands, and the double-lined hood is for when the breeze picks up.
- The beer garden. Evenings outside at the taproom get cooler from here, and a hoodie is the reason to stay for one more.
Pick the art, then the color
Every design is a piece of the brewery. The beer designs carry the label art for the beer itself: Screamin’ Reels comes in black, Indigo Blue or white, while Sea Cow and LocAle come in black or white. The Saltwater wave has the widest range, with six colors from white to Sport Grey. If you want something quieter, the Eco Turtle Only hoodie keeps it to a small turtle on the chest.
How to make it last
The product pages list the fabric but no washing instructions, so treat this as a routine for a printed cotton-poly hoodie, not a care label.
- Turn it inside out before it goes in. That keeps the print away from zippers, buttons and the drum.
- Wash it cold with like colors. A black hoodie and a white one should not share a load.
- Go easy on the dryer. Low heat or a line dry is kinder to the print and the rib-knit cuffs than a hot cycle.
- Rinse off the salt. After a boat day or a beach night, wash it soon instead of leaving it balled up in the bag.
- Do not iron the print. If it needs pressing, iron it inside out.
Ordering, and where to wear it first
Hoodies start at $45 and the packable jackets are $64.95. We offer free U.S. shipping on orders over $75, so two hoodies clear it, and so does a hoodie with a jacket. We ship merch within the USA only, and we do not sell or ship beer online.
The first cool night is a good excuse to visit the taproom at 1701 W. Atlantic Ave in Delray Beach, the first building off the I-95 Atlantic Ave exit. On Wednesdays we are open 12 to 10, and the food on site comes from the rotating food trucks out front. The events page lists what is on this week. If last week’s drinkware guide found you a mug, the hoodie is the other half of the evening.
Pick the art, check the size chart once, and wash it inside out. Then come find us in the beer garden.
